John Ampontuah Kumah was born on August 4, 1978, in Ejisu Odaho, Ashanti Region, Ghana. His secondary studies at Opoku Ware School laid the groundwork for his future pursuits.
Kumah attended the University of Ghana (Legon) to further his studies, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Philosophy.
He then furthered his education, and in 2009 he graduated from GIMPA with an MBA in Finance. Kumah has a long history of academic achievement and a wide range of credentials.
Along with his degrees in economics and finance, he also holds a professional law degree (BL) from the Ghana School of Law and a law degree (LLB) from the University of Ghana.
Because of his dedication to perpetual education, he earned a doctorate in business innovation from the Swiss Business School and a postgraduate diploma in applied business research from the Nobel International Business Institute.
Entrepreneurship and Leadership
Motivated by a spirit of entrepreneurship, Kumah established Majak Associates Ltd., a construction company, and went on to become the managing partner of Aduaprokye Chambers.
As a result of his commitment to encouraging entrepreneurship, he was named CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), where he oversaw programs that assisted budding entrepreneurs and advanced innovation throughout Ghana.
Political Career and contributions to Government
Kumah entered politics driven by his enthusiasm for doing good deeds and his wish to bring about constructive change in his neighborhood. He was elected to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seat for the Ejisu constituency in the 2020 general election.
He was adamant about serving his people’s needs and fighting for their cause on a national scale during his time as a member of parliament. Kumah was named the Deputy Minister for Finance in April 2021 in honor of his commitment to and achievements in the political arena.
He served in a number of committee capacities, most notably as vice chairman of the Committee on Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs. In his capacity as deputy minister, he was instrumental in the development of significant government initiatives such as the Domestic Debt Exchange (DDEP) and the E-Levy.
Personal Life and Legacy
In addition to his career pursuits, Kumah was a preacher and loving family guy who was well-known for his steadfast faith and devotion to his neighborhood. He had the good fortune to have six children from his marriage to Apostle Mrs. Lilian Kumah.
Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah tragically died on March 7, 2024, leaving an indelible mark of leadership, service, and unshakable commitment to the advancement of his country and its citizens.
Tributes and Condolences
Many people were saddened by Dr. John’s demise, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who both commended his commitment and contributions to the government’s economic program.
In addition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) sent its condolences and ordered party flags to be flown at half-mast in the deceased deputy minister of finance’s honor.
Despite having a brief life, he left behind a legacy that inspires people who want to change the world for the better.
