The recent union of a 63-year-old Ga priest and a 12-year-old child caused concern for Nii Adote Otintor II, the Paramount Chief for the Sempe traditional territory. The Ga State’s Mankralo claims that the action is unjustified and out of keeping with the Ga Dangbe people’s traditions.

Not too long ago, the elderly Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, and the young Naa Ayemoede were married in a traditional ceremony.

The public has strongly criticized this incident because of the large age gap and any effects it may have on the child’s future. The Gborbu Wulomo spokesperson has defended the move, calling the criticism “ignorant at best.”

All of the young people in Georgia should rise now, I am telling them. A few ethnic group leaders are dragging the tribe through the mud. The community will be tarnished if we toy with things like this, Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II stated.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the contentious customary marriage are being conducted, according to the Chieftaincy Ministry.

According to the GaDangme Council, the 12-year-old girl and the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua are engaged in a betrothal rather than a marriage.

The 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII, received criticism after a video of him being married to 12-year-old Naa Okromo in Nungua went viral.

The GaDangme Council addressed the issue and said in a statement that the story circulating now differs from what it was before they met with Gborbu Wulomo and a few of his elders.

“It’s crucial to make clear that the traditional ruler has declared that the girl’s relationship with him is a betrothal rather than a marriage. We lean towards supporting the Gborbu Wulomo since the initial report mentioned that the girl had to undergo a different ceremony in order to cleanse herself and get ready for childbirth,” the council stated.

A betrothal may involve an underage person, the Council acknowledged, but it does not let the individual engage in sexual relations with the child, which could jeopardize the child’s schooling or even put her at risk of an uneasy delivery due to immature organs.

“She ought to pursue her education until she reaches marriageable age, and if she is still willing to do so, marriage shouldn’t stop her from doing so.”

According to the statement, “The GaDangme Council also begs the child’s parents to watch over her and explain to her that, despite the customary betrothal, she is still a child and has the right to enjoy life and participate in childhood activities like all others her age.

The police have initiated an investigation into the alleged marriage between the 12-year-old girl and 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo. They are currently providing protection to the girl and her mother in Nungua, Accra, as part of their efforts to ensure their safety and well-being.
