President Akufo-Addo has taken the decision to relieve Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang of his duties as the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).
Consequently, Mr. Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, the Deputy Director-General for Investments, has been promoted to the position of Director-General for SSNIT.
Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang has been removed from his position as Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) by President Akufo-Addo’s decision.
As a result, the deputy director-general for investments, Mr. Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, has been appointed to the post of director-general for SSNIT.
The directive is for Dr. John Ofori Tenkorang to transfer his responsibilities to Mr. Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo by Monday, April 15, 2024. Mr. Osafo-Maafo has been appointed as the new Director-General of SSNIT, effective immediately.
Dr. Tenkorang was notified of his demise of appointment, effective April 15, 2024, in a letter dated April 8, 2024, signed by the Secretary of the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante.
He was told to give Mr. Osafo-Maafo his office and proceed to acquire whatever incentives he was entitled to in his final years.
Professor Enoch Antwi, a governance expert, has criticized Mr. Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo’s appointment. Prof. Antwi raised concerns regarding the appointment’s apparent nepotism because Mr. Osafo-Maafo is related to Yaw Osafo-Maafo, the senior advisor to President Akufo-Addo.
Prof. Antwi questioned the reasoning behind choosing Mr. Osafo-Maafo for the position and underlined the necessity for transparency in the hiring process.
He asked the government to give specific explanations for both Mr. Osafo-Maafo’s appointment and the dismissal of Dr. Tenkorang.
The criticism draws attention to more general issues with justice and accountability in public appointments. In particular, Prof. Antwi emphasized the significance of public trust and meritocracy in guaranteeing efficient governance in important organizations such as SSNIT.
