Switzerland defeated the Philippines 2-0 in their opening match of the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The Swiss took the lead after Ramona Bachmann’s penalty late in the first half, and Seraina Piubel extended their advantage in the 64th minute with a close-range shot.

“I wasn’t overly anxious, but I was aware that the situation was crucial. I knew that it would be crucial for our team to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead, so I was totally focused.”

“I definitely tried to score, but I have a lot of confidence when it comes to shooting penalties. So I was quite composed.” Bachmann told the media.

Katrina Guillou believed she had given the Philippines a good start when she put the ball in the back of the net after 16 minutes, but it was quickly rejected for offside.

Switzerland now leads Group A on goal differential, ahead of co-hosts New Zealand.
